Check out the books on display in the Fellowship Hall or visit our library across from the Saint Peter Chapel. Here are three new selections that are on display.
While at the Global Mission Event, I purchased several new books for children. I find I enjoy children's books as much as any child would. Among these is the
Quiltmaker's Gift by Jeff Brumbeau and Gail de Marcken. This delightful children's fable celebrates the joy of giving through charming verse and richly colored illustration.
The story unfolds as we learn of a greedy king who wants something that will make him happy, as none of his riches have. Can the quiltmaker, who gives away most of her hard-worked treasures, bring joy to the king? I suppose this book attracted me as we continue to make quilts here at Grace Church.
Another book I enjoyed reading recently, also available in Fellowship Hall, is
Desire of the Everlasting Hills by historian Thomas Cahill. Introducing us first to "the people Jesus knew," Cahill describes the oppressive Roman political presence, the pervasive Greek cultural influence, and especially the widely varied social and religious context of the Judaism in which Jesus moved and flourished. These backgrounds, essential to a complete understanding of Jesus, lead to the author's stunningly original interpretation of the New Testament; much of it based on material from the ancient Greek brilliantly translated by the author himself-that will delight readers and surprise even biblical scholars.
A third book of interest is
Silent Conversations: Reading the Bible in Good Company by William Apel, which I picked up at Provident Book Store. I enjoyed reading this book for my morning devotions. It includes a Bible reading and quotes from well-known Christians, some contemporary, some historical-Martin Luther, Desmond Tutu, Mother Teresa, C.S. Lewis, Thomas Merton, John Wesley, Madeleine L'Engle, and others. Each chapter is followed by an examination of the Bible passage and its importance to the experience of these Christians. This book is a good aid to your Bible study at home.
